Chaparral earns Turf tie
Johar and High Chaparral
Johar and High Chaparral could not be separated
Irish racehorse High Chaparral finished in a dead-heat with Johar in a thrilling renewal of the Turf at the Breeders' Cup in California, on a remarkable day at Santa Anita.

The tie - the first in the event's 20-year history - came after a lengthy deliberations from the stewards, with Falbrav, the leader going into the home straight, also involved in the photo finish.

The trio crossed the finishing post in a line and were inseparable to the naked eye, and after 15 minutes the stewards were unable to separate Mick Kinane's mount from Johar.

Falbrav, with Daryll Holland on board, was awarded third.

Balto Star and The Tin Man made the early running with Johar being held up and Falbrav and High Chaparral biding their time just behind the leaders.

Falbrav took the lead along the rails soon after entering the straight, but defending champion High Chaparral responded well to get on terms and nose just in front approaching the line.

But it was not enough to move clear of the equally fast-finishing Johar.

"I thought I had won and I was surprised it was taking so long for them to call the result," said Kinane.

"We knew it was going to be a tough race this year - they were good opponents. But this horse always has something to offer, even if sometimes you have got to drag it out of him."

Pleasantly Perfect won the $4m Classic to give trainer Richard Mandella a remarkable fourth victory of the day in the finale of the eight-race meeting.

Mandella also won the Juvenile with Action This Day, the Juveniles with Halfbridled and Johar shared the win with High Chaparral in the Turf to equal D. Wayne Luka's 1988 Breeders' Cup record.

The horse, ridden by Alex Solis. pulled away from Medaglia D'Oro, who finished second, for a two-length victory with Dynever finishing third.

Congaree and Medaglia d'Oro jostled for the lead from the start, but Pleasantly Perfect charged up the middle at the end to take victory.

"I never thought lightning would strike twice, but it struck harder," said Mandella.

Islington became the first British-trained winner of any Breeders' Cup race in California after champion jockey Kieren Fallon rode her to victory in the Filly & Mare Turf.

The Sir Michael Stoute-trained four-year-old reeled in Aidan O'Brien's L'Ancresse close to the finish and O'Brien's other runner Yesterday came through to take third and complete a famous one-two-three for Europe.

"I've been lucky enough to ride in California for a number of years," said Fallon.

"I learnt a lot about timing and how to ride these tracks and this was one of the first tracks I rode at.

"Islington is one of the best fillies I've ever ridden. I was surprised it took so long to get past L'Ancresse, but she has had a long season and it was very hot out there."

Jockey Julie Krone became the first woman jockey to ride a Breeders' Cup winner as she guided Halfbridled to win the Juvenile Fillies.

Drawn badly in 14th, Krone moved into a challenging position after the first bend, took up the running in the straight and held on comfortably by two and a half lengths from Ashado and Victory U.S.A.

"Good horses make good jockeys," said Krone.

"I did more pulling than pushing. She's just a phenomenal filly."

The Mile race fell to French horse Six Perfections, ridden by Jerry Bailey, registering his 14th Breeders' Cup success and extending his own record in the series.

The horse was reluctant to enter the stalls but came through with a storming late run to edge out Touch of the Blues by three-quarters of a length with Century City third.

Adoration, ridden by Patrick Valenzuela, made all the running to win the $2m Distaff race, upsetting hot favourite Sightseek, ridden by Bailey, who finished fourth.
