High Chaparral finally gave Aidan O'Brien something to smile about by winning the Breeders Cup Turf race at Arlington Park.

The Irish trainer had endured a bleak day in Chicago until the English and Irish Derby winner came home by 1� lengths from With Anticipation.

The French six-year-old Falcon Flight was third.

Earlier, O'Brien had seen Rock of Gibraltar fail to win an eighth consecutive Group One race in the Mile.

Stablemate Landseer, the former French 2,000 Guineas winner, had to be destroyed after a bad fall in the same race.

"It's nice consolation after a really tough day," said High Chaparral's jockey Mick Kinane.

"We didn't have much luck with the Rock. This made up for it. This is a good colt. Once he quickened up, the race was over."

High Chaparral watched The Tin Man lead around the back stretch and final turn before surging alongside With Anticipation and pulling away at the end.

"I thought there might be a little more pace," Kinane said.

"Ideally I would like a bit more form but he was classy enough to go his own way. It was very easy."

Owner Michael Tabor said: "It was a slow run race but he won quite comfortably."

O'Brien admitted the horse had been a little rusty going into the race.

"He came on at the end," he said. "He came out with an awful lot of class and he will be back next year."

The smallest field in the event's history - only eight starters - also featured Irish horses Golan and Ballingarry, who were sixth and seventh respectively.
