| Saturday, 11 May, 2002, 15:50 GMT 16:50 UK Cup glory for Grandera ![]() Dettori guides Grandera to victory in Singapore Grandera, with Frankie Dettori in the saddle, lived up to expectations and won Singapore's richest horse race on Saturday. The Dubai-trained colt was the favourite to win the $1.6m Singapore Airlines International Cup and came home two lengths clear. "I know my horse and today he was in tip top shape," said Dettori immediately after the race. "He has a great kick and he delivered." Paolini, a German horse ridden by Andreas Suborics, was second in the 10-furlong race. There was an upset when Universal Prince, an Australian entry, fell in at last turn. Both horse and Australian jockey Justin Sheehan walked off the racecourse. Final-turn break Western Pride break first and lead for almost the whole race. But Grandera and Paolini broke on the final turn of the all-weather surface took over in the final straight. Third place went to Hong Kong-trained Indigenous, ridden by Olivier Deleuze. The third annual Singapore Airlines International Cup is the third leg of the World Series Racing Championship. This year marks the first time the race has been included in the World Series circuit. The 2002 World Series Racing Championship is made up of 14 races in 11 countries. |
