 | |  Sunday, 21 April, 2002, 13:02 GMT 14:02 UK Eishin Preston tames Hong Kong  Eishin Preston wins the world's richest 2,000m race Eishin Preston stormed to a half-length victory in the world's richest 2,000 metres race, the Queen Elizabeth II Cup, in Hong Kong on Sunday. The Japanese horse, ridden by Yuichi Fukunaga and trained by Shuji Kitahashi, edged out Agnes Digital in the $1.78m (�1.2m) group one race, which is the second leg of the world series. Nine-year-old Hong Kong stayer Indigenous finished third, ahead of Universal Prince.
Top Italian jockey Frankie Dettori could manage only fifth place on Godolphin-owned Grandera, after missing the start and being forced wide to make up lost ground. Grandera briefly took the lead as the 14-strong field turned for home but lacked the energy to stay ahead. Said Dettori of his mount: "He has run okay. He came round the bend nice and steady and I said let's go and he hit the front but then he got tired and his head came up. "Maybe he is just a race short of his best." Winning jockey Fukunaga was understandably elated after a tough race. "The early pace was slow, but it picked up in the final part of the race. I thought I would win at the head of the straight, but in the last hundred metres I was worried that Agnes Digital might beat me." | |
