Euro tournament key to success at Olympics - Mantell
Mantell made his international debut nearly eight years ago
Reading hockey player Richard Mantell thinks that the European Championships in Germany this month will prove vital for Olympic success at London 2012.
Mantell told BBC Berkshire: "How we [England] perform in the Euros will affect how we [GB] do in London.
"We are all prioritising this competition. We are familiar with the other teams.
"They're strong and well organised. But there's no reason why we can't perform well in these Championships."
England face Ireland on Sunday, but Mantell said it is crucial the team are already thinking about the Olympics next year.
"Of course we're looking ahead to the Olympics now; it'll be great to be playing in front of our own crowd for a change. First we want to defend our title here and improve even further in time for London."
Mantell said he was "disappointed" for his younger brother and Reading team-mate Simon, who was not selected for the European competition.
"It's a blow for Simon. We enjoy playing together so it will be hard in that respect, but I'm sure he will back in the squad in time for London.
"It shows how the coaches here can pick any player if they're in good form. The spirit is good here."
