Mantell is among four Reading players in the England Commonwealths squad |
Reading's Simon Mantell believes England have the ability to win gold at the Commonwealth Games. The forward has been included in the 16-man squad for Delhi after recovering from a broken foot. He told BBC Berkshire: "It's great to be back playing in the Commonwealth Games. We are definitely a medal if not a gold medal winning side." Mantell was involved in England's 4-0 Champions Trophy final defeat by Australia earlier this month. "We were all pleased to get to the final," added Mantell. "It was a great experience but we hope to build on it and go one step further. "The squad are all looking forward to get revenge in the Commonwealth games against Australia." Mantell feels the upcoming tournaments act as stepping stones to the overall aim of an Olympic gold in London 2012. "The team has progressed a lot over the years, we want to continue developing and improving up to 2012," he said. "The opportunity of winning Olympic gold on your home surface is always on the back of your mind. "It's something we're all working towards and want to do well in." Mantell's older brother Richard has also been named in the England Commonwealth Games squad. "Richard's done very well with his progress and with his injury to get back playing so quickly," Mantell added. "The fact he's been named in the squad shows the progress he's made and he's very much looking forward to playing for England as well."
