Australia celebrate during their tense victory over Korea |
Australia maintained their unbeaten record at the Women's World Cup with a pulsating 4-3 win over Korea in Madrid. Defending champions Argentina later dropped crucial points in a 2-2 draw with South Africa, leaving Australia on top of Group B.
In the day's other match, Japan and USA drew 0-0 to earn their first points.
"This was a crunch match for us today, we rate Korea highly and I am very pleased we came away with the points," said Australia coach Frank Murray.
"It still is not enough to guarantee us a semi berth. We believe we need at least one more point from the next two games and a good goal difference to go through."
After going behind on six minutes, Australia responded with goals from Angie Skirving, Nikki Hudson, Karen Smith and Hope Munro.
Kore battled on, edging a second goal before the break and testing Australian nerves when Park Mi Hyun scored five minutes from time.
Argentina's Mercedes Margalot hit the opening goal against South Africa in the 29th minute in her 200th international, but goals by Jen Wilson and Tarryn Bright put South Africa ahead.
Argentina's Rosario Luchetti drew her team level in the 67th minute, but Argentina coach Gabriel Minadeo was unhappy with his players.
"My team played with no judgment and intelligence," said Minadeo. "The result is better than our game today.
"We played too individually, although one must not be disappointed with this result."
