But the British squad, needing to finish in the top eight, came 11th in qualifying in Aarhus, Denmark.

However, they qualified for the 2007 championships and the chance to secure their place at the 2008 Olympics.

City of Liverpool gymnast Tweddle qualified in fourth place in the all-round competition with a haul of 59.975 points.

Tweddle will be seeking to make up for last year's disappointment when she just missed out on an historic bronze medal.

Defending champion Chellsie Memmel, who won the qualifying section with a total of 61.350 despite struggling with a foot problem, is the favourite to win the title.

Her fellow American Jana Bieger and 15-year-old Italian Vanessa Ferrari will also be big threats in the final.

The 22-year-old Tweddle came fifth in qualifying in the bars and sixth on the floor.

The United States team, inspired by Memmel, finished top of the 33 teams in qualifying with a total of 243.325 points.

China came second on 235.025 while Ukraine were third and Russia fourth.
