Townend won the Burghley Horse trials in September 2009
Oliver Townend completed a triple win at the 2010 Isleham Horse Trials.
The 27-year-old from Huddersfield overcame New Zealand's Mark Todd to claim the open intermediate competition riding Neo Du Breuil at the weekend.
He also took the intermediate and novice titles on Power Line and Lord Limmerick respectively.
"I'm really pleased, I've had five rides and three wins, it's just great to have come out and be on good form," he told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire.
"You practice all winter and you don't have a clue how ready you are.
"You think you're ready and for them to come out and go as well as they have, I'm thrilled."
The 2009 Badminton and Burghley winner finished the open intermediate class with 33.20, which was enough to see off Todd's total of 33.90 with Regent Lad.
But Ward, who also finished third in the same class, was upbeat after the result.
"I'm very happy, it was the first run of the year so I wasn't necessarily out to win it," he said.
"We had a nice round in cross country so I'm very happy"
