Britain's Leslie Law slipped down to third place after the final day of the Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event. Law, on Coup de Coeur, was in second place behind American Kim Severson after the cross-country stage.
But the Olympic gold medallist had a rail down and incurred a single time penalty in Sunday's jumping round to move onto 55.4 points.
Australian Phillip Dutton took advantage, finishing on 55.2 with Severson well ahead on 38.2.
The Kentucky Three-Day Event is the first of three competitions which make up eventing's Grand Slam - the others are Badminton and Burghley.
