Zara Phillips (right) surpasses her mother's European gold medal haul

She rattled several fences on her mount Toytown in the showjumping section at Blenheim but remained clear to finish ahead of team-mate William Fox-Pitt.

Former European champion Pippa Funnell dropped to ninth from second.

Ingrid Klimke secured the bronze for Germany, who lost out to the French in the race for team silver.

Phillips, 24, received her medals from her mother, the Princess Royal, who won the individual event at Burghley in 1971.

"To win just feels amazing," said Phillips. "I'm quite speechless actually for once.

"It has always been a massive dream to win gold like this. It is so bizarre to think I have one more than my mother."

Phillips was cheered on by a massive crowd and rugby star boyfriend Mike Tindall as well as her parents.

"Even near the end when I jumped the second last and I still had a fence (to go), someone was cheering and everyone else was saying: 'Shshshsh, wait, wait, wait'," said Phillips.

"I did rattle a couple of (fences) but I think that's quite good because if you don't touch them you get a bit casual."

Phillips narrowly missed out on selection for the British equestrian team at last year's Athens Olympics.
