Kindred is one of the most experienced swimmers on the team |
Sascha Kindred, Natalie Jones, Ellie Simmonds and Matt Walker all added to Britain's golden haul at the World Short Course swimming championships. Kindred and Jones both won their respective 100m individual medley races with Jones beating teammates Simmonds and Liz Johnson into second and third. But Simmonds gained revenge over Jones in their 50m freestyle event to take her fourth gold in Rio de Janeiro. Walker claimed victory in his 50m freestyle final. Kindred lowered his own world record by a second in winning his second event of the week, leading from start to finish to clock a time of one minute 14.67 seconds. "Breaking the 1.15 mark has been an aim of mine for some time and I am chuffed to have done that in these conditions," he said. "I still have half the meet left but I have two gold medals under my belt and the competition is going to plan." Jones fought hard to hold off the challenge of Simmonds over the last 25m of their medley race, touching in a time of 1:30.85 ahead of the teenager's 1:31.59 with Johnson third in 1:32.69. "I'm really pleased to have won gold," said Jones. "I knew I had to work hard and I just pushed myself. I've worked hard on my fitness throughout the year and I'm so happy that it has paid off." | 606: DEBATE |
Simmonds gained the upper hand in the freestyle final, taking 1.01 seconds off the world record to finish in 36.68 - a second ahead of Jones who also went under the old mark. "I just wanted to get in there and race hard," said Simmonds. "I wanted to go faster but it didn't happen." Walker improved his own world record set in 2006 with a strong second 25m to triumph in 27.28 seconds and he also won bronze in his 100m individual medley race. "That was a great swim," he admitted. "It makes up for Sheffield last week where I was disqualified. I'm a sprinter and it was tough but I did it and it is great." There were also silvers for Stephanie Millward and Rob Welbourn, who both broke the British and European record in their 400m freestyle races and for Claire Cashmore in her 100m breaststroke event.
