Peter Norfolk secured the win for the quad team |
Great Britain's quad and junior tennis teams won their round-robin matches on Tuesday to reach the semi-finals at the 25th Invacare World Team Cup. The quad team made it two wins out of two with a 3-0 win over Italy at the event in Nottingham. Two-time Paralympic gold medallist Peter Norfolk sealed the tie with a 6-1 6-3 win over Italy's Giuseppe Polidori. Great Britain's juniors eased to a 3-0 win over Poland to seal their place in the semi-finals on Thursday. Jamie Burdekin got the GB quad team off to a winning start, beating Marco Innocenti 6-4 7-6 (7-3). Burdekin and Andrew Lapthorne won the dead doubles rubber 6-1 6-3 to wrap up the victory. The quad team will play Israel in Wednesday's dead rubber, having already secured a tie in Thursday's semi-finals against either the USA or Netherlands, who are assured of finishing in the top two positions in the other pool. For the juniors, Dermot Bailey maintained his unbeaten record this week when he beat Poland's Bartek Maciejewski 6-2 6-0. Philip Cochrane dropped just one game to Piotr Korcz as Britain recorded their second 3-0 victory of the week in the junior event. Fellow Invacare World Team Cup debutants Bailey and Josh Steels secured the doubles rubber against Korcz and Maciejewski 6-0 6-0. The juniors will face a more difficult task against Australia in their final round-robin contest on Wednesday. Wednesday's schedule also sees Great Britain's men's play second seeds the Netherlands in a difficult quarter-final in World Group 1. Great Britain, last year's World Group 2 champions, are seventh seeds for the men's event and are on course to justify their ranking, having reached the last eight after victory in their opening tie on Monday against Italy. Meanwhile, Great Britain will meet the United States in Wednesday's women's quarter-finals, the second seeds aiming to go another step closer to a possible first appearance in the women's final.
