Reid is hoping to get back inside the world's top 30 |
Jordanne Whiley, Gordon Reid and Peter Norfolk secured a British singles clean sweep in the North East Wheelchair Tennis Tournament finals in Sunderland. Whiley, 16, defeated Lucy Shuker in the women's singles, winning 4-6 6-4 7-6 for only her second career victory over the British number one. Defending champion and fellow Paralympian Reid beat David Phillipson in the men's singles. Norfolk proved too strong for Andrew Lapthorne in the quad singles decider. The Beijing Paralympic gold medallist and world number one dropped just two games in his four matches over the weekend tournament for his second North East title in four years. But both Whiley and Reid were made to work hard before emerging victorious in their finals. After losing the opening set to world number 10 Shuker, Whiley recovered to take a 3-0 lead in the second and go on to level the match. Shuker had the initiative until late in the decider but had to survive five deuces before once more edging ahead 6-5. | 606: DEBATE |
But Whiley forced the tie-break and won seven of the next nine points for the victory which is set to take the teenager back into the world's top 20. Reid, 17, who beat the French former world number eight Frederic Cazeaudumec in the last four, made a slow start against Phillipson, trailing 2-0 early before edging ahead 3-2 and then breaking again to move 5-3 ahead before taking the set. Neither player was able to gain a clear advantage in the second set and in the resulting tie-break, Phillipson held his nerve to convert his fourth set point to force the decider. Reid made the crucial breakthrough of the final set in the sixth game to lead 4-2 and he maintained his advantage to wrap up a 6-4 6-7(10-12) 6-4 victory, a win which allows him reclaim the British number one ranking from Marc McCarroll.
