Burdekin took a break from action after the Beijing Paralympics |
Beijing Paralympians Gordon Reid, Jordanne Whiley and Jamie Burdekin all emerged victorious from the North West Challenge wheelchair tennis event. Reid, 17, retained his singles title, beating the experienced Kevin Plowman 6-4 6-1 in Sunday's final in Preston. Women's top seed Whiley, the current British number two, defeated fellow junior Louise Hunt 6-2 6-2. Burdekin had to work hard in the quad final before getting the better of Andrew Lapthorne 4-6 6-3 6-3. It was the Crosby player's first tournament since winning bronze in the Paralympic quad doubles with fellow Briton Peter Norfolk last September and his first title since January last year. Reid completed a good weekend when he partnered Marc McCarroll to a 7-5 7-5 win over Plowman and Alex Jewitt in the men's doubles. Hunt avenged her singles loss to Whiley in the women's doubles, partnering Debbie Thomas to a 6-3 6-0 success over Whiley and France's Pauline Helouin.
