Shuker failed to come away with a medal at the Beijing Paralympics |
Britain's Lucy Shuker was celebrating after claiming singles and doubles success at the Nottingham Indoor Wheelchair Tennis tournament. The second seed beat world number eight Aniek van Koot of the Netherlands 7-5 6-1 in the singles decider. "It's always good to win a tournament on home and to beat a top 10 player makes it even more special," she said. She then teamed up with fellow Briton Jordanne Whiley to beat Marjolein Buis and Katharina Kruger in straight sets. Shuker and Whiley came back from 5-2 down in the opening set to win 7-6 6-3 against the Dutch-German partnership and give Shuker her first doubles title of the season and Whiley her fourth. Shuker, who has been working on some changes to her serve and return since missing out on a quarter-final place at the Beijing Paralympics, made a strong start in the opening set against van Koot, taking a 3-0 lead. Van Koot came back to level at 4-4 but Shuker, who is ranked 13th in the world, came through strongly at the end of the set and once she took a 3-0 lead in the second, she was in control. Shuker and van Koot could meet again later this month in the NEC Singles Masters, the final event of the year. The Taunton player admitted afterwards: "It's really satisfying to see the changes I've been working on in training making a difference to my game. "I played well for most of the match and it is a big confidence boost ahead of my Masters debut." Swedish top seed Stefan Olsson won the men's singles title, beating second seed Joachim Gerard of Belgium 6-2 1-6 6-0 for his fourth title of the year. Olsson also captured a second title when he and Tom Egberink of the Netherlands beat second seeds Gordon Reid, from Scotland, and Laszlo Farkas 6-3 6-1.
