Video - GB win basketball bronze

Britain beat USA 85-77 to win bronze in the men's basketball competition.

Captain Jon Pollock orchestrated the victory and scored 15 points as GB matched their bronze in Athens.

Terry Bywater, who top scored with 32, scored on the buzzer as GB outscored America 24-11 in the third quarter to lead 61-47 and all-but seal the win.

Australia clinched the gold medal after staving off a late Canadian charge to avenge their 2004 defeat with a 72-60 victory in the final.

British head coach Murray Treseder, who returned to his home in Australia on medical grounds during the competition, immediately phoned stand-in coach Sinclair Thomas to offer his congratulations.

And Thomas told BBC Sport: "I said to Murray that it was all down to him.

"I'm so proud of the players. It's been a hectic week with all the turmoil, but we've shown grit and determination to win bronze.

"We didn't really expect to get the bronze. The goal was quarter-finals and then anything can happen.

"We're ahead of schedule. We've got a new team who are quite young and we are raring to get the gold medal in 2012."

Bywater said: "I can't believe we've done it.

"It's definitely my best individual performance, but it was a great team performance.

"This bronze feels like gold. It's the hardest tournament we've ever played in - first to get out of the group of death and then to beat the world number one in this match."

Pollock added: "It's absolutely unbelievable, we strive on playing on emotion."

And Andy Blake, who confirmed it was his last GB appearance, said: "There's no better way to go out than winning a medal."
