David Roberts hopes to overtake Tanni Grey Thompson's gold haul

Welsh interest will again be focused on swimming and cycling in Beijing when the 2008 Paralympics begin on Sunday.

David Roberts and Nyree Lewis are tipped for medals in the pool while Jody Cundy is hoping to emulate the feats of Wales' Olympic cyclists.

Roberts hopes to overtake legendary Paralympian Tanni Grey Thompson to become Wales and Britain's most successful Paralympian of all time.

Cardiff City fan Roberts won four golds in Athens and three in Sydney in 2000.

In Beijing he could pass fellow Welsh star Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson's mark of 11 Paralympic golds.

Roberts is bidding for a hat-trick of wins in the S7 50m and 100m freestyle events and will face a tough challenge from team-mate Matt Walker.

Roberts could also be in some of GB's four relay squads.

Lewis is one half of GB's swimming's golden couple and is based at Hereford with Sascha Kindred. Both go to the Games as defending champions.

This is Lewis' third Games and she will defend her S6 100m backstroke title and will also bid for an all-British clean sweep in the SM6 200m individual medley where she lines up against team-mates Natalie Jones and Eleanor Simmonds.

Simmonds will also be a rival in the 400m freestyle, where she set a world record earlier this year. Lewis also goes in the 100m breaststroke.

Cundy could have been competing alongside Roberts and Lewis , but switched from the pool to cycling in 2006.

He is set to become a four-time Paralympian, having already has won three golds.

His main challenge will come from Czech rider Jiri Jezek.

Wales has 31 competitors at the games, competing in 11 sports - archery, athletics, cycling, five-a-side football, judo, rowing, sailing, swimming, table tennis, wheelchair basketball and wheelchair rugby.
