Nicole Cooke claims the gold that inspired Team GB |
Welsh interest in the Beijing Olympics ended on Friday as Merthyr Tydfil's Sarah Thomas and her GB hockey team-mates finished sixth. On Thursday Newport sprinter Christian Malcolm watched as his hopes of a place in the 4x100 final evaporated during a botched baton handover while he rested. However, Wales' tally of three golds and two silvers was the nation's best since the 1920 Antwerp Games. Wales' athletes will be guests at a public event in Cardiff Bay on Tuesday. | 606: DEBATE | Cyclist Nicole Cooke from Wick in the Vale of Glamorgan set the tone for the Great Britain team with her stunning sprint finish to claim gold in the women's road race on day two of competition. Another Welsh cyclist, Cardiff's Geraint Thomas, was part of the four-man pursuit team that set a world record three minutes 55.314 seconds to win their event. At the rowing lake Tom James, from Wrexham was part of the four-man team which claimed gold in glorious fashion. Rower Tom Lucy of Monmouth clamed silver in the eight-man event and Barry swimmer David Davies did likewise in one of the bravest performances of the games at the same venue in the 10km open-water race.
