David Phillipson has ended Jayant Mistry's 14-year reign as Britain's number one wheelchair tennis player.

Nottinghamshire star Phillipson, 18, has also become the youngest ever British men's number one following a superb 2007 and impressive start to 2008.

Last year Phillipson became the first Briton since 1994 to beat Leicestershire's Mistry in singles.

Phillipson began 2008 by reaching the last 16 of the Australian Open men's

singles and the Sydney International.

This left the Bingham teenager with a career high world ranking of number 26, just two places and 27 points behind Mistry, who retired from international competition at the end of last season.

But following last week's Biel-Bienne indoor tournament in Switzerland, Mistry has slipped eight places to 32 in the rankings, while Phillipson moves up one place to a career high of 25.
