Woods & Fearnley take Tyne titles
Wheelchair racer Shelly Woods
Woods has enjoyed a successful year this year
Britain's Shelly Woods and Australian Kurt Fearnley emerged victorious from the Tunnel 2K race through Newcastle's Tyne Tunnel.

The race saw wheelchair athletes first race downhill for one kilometre and then uphill for one kilometre.

Woods, from Blackpool, clocked five minutes 21.1 seconds over the course to beat Canadian Diane Roy by 5.2 seconds.

Fearnley smashed the course record with three minutes 47.5 seconds in the men's race, with Briton Tushar Patel second.

"I hit 42 miles per hour on the downhill section which was awesome," said Fearnley.

"The heavier guys were still in front at the bottom but hill climbing is my strength and I just powered my way up the second kilometre to win."
