British swimmer David Roberts will go head-to-head with his French rival Eric Lindmann in the 200m individual medley this weekend. The Welshman has not attempted the race on the international stage since adding it to his repertoire last year.
"Obviously I'd like to beat Lindmann, but if not I'd like to be within a second of him just to let him know I'm around, " said Roberts.
Roberts is part of a 12-strong squad competing at the French Championships.
The competition in Aix-en-Provence gives Britain's Paralympic hopefuls a chance to test their mettle against their international rivals.
Roberts (S7) set the fastest time in the world last year in the 200m medley but will be challenged by Lindmann, who is both the Paralympic champion and the world record holder.
Double Paralympic champion Sascha Kindred and Nyree Lewis are also travelling to France before joining up with their British team-mates for a training camp.
"Going straight into a training camp will help us to keep them focused for a long period, " explained Tim Reddish, performance director for disability swimming.
"We want them to race fast in France, but they are not cutting down on their training
" France is about race preparation and developing their race skills."
