Watts capped a good year with four world records in Wales |
Britain's swimmers broke 31 records, including seven world marks, at the Welsh Winter Disability Championships in Swansea. Oxford swimmer Danielle Watts (class S1) set four new world records in the 50m and 100m freestyle and backstroke.
David Roberts (s7) was delighted to break his own 100m freestyle world record in his home pool.
"It was a really good experience to break a world record for the first time ever on Welsh soil," he said.
Penny Clapcott, 15, also found the Swansea pool to her liking as she grabbed two world records.
The performances in Wales proved that Britain's swimmers will be strong medal contenders at next year's Paralympics in Athens.
Tim Reddish, performance director for disability swimming, agreed that his team had not let him down at the high performance centre.
"For the Welsh Amateur Swimming Association to put a disability event on for the first time, it went exceptionally well," said Reddish.
"The swimmers seemed happy and the pool looks as though it's fast with all the records. The results to me were positive."
The elite members of the British team stayed on in Swansea after the competition for an intensive training camp.
