'Wolfie blows down the house with 161 finish

Defending champion Martin Adams marched into the semi-finals of the BDO World Darts Championships at Lakeside with a dominant 5-1 win over Ross Smith.

Number one seed Adams needed 59 minutes to overcome his rival, firing checkouts of 161 and 121 and a closing 116.

Martin Phillips faced a tougher route into the last four after coming from behind to beat Gary Robson 5-4.

Robson had opened up a 3-1 lead but Phillips hit back to 4-4 before a fine 164 checkout helped him to victory.

And the unseeded Phillips believes he can go all the way and lift the title after ousting the 13th seed from the quarter-finals.

"Deep down I think I can do it," said the Welshman. "The match with Gary was a battle.

"The way he started I was struggling to keep up but I did as I always do, just plodded on. I will not give up until the game is over. There was emotion but I do not show it."

Adams' victory puts him within one match of his fourth final appearance and a third title.

Only Eric Bristow, John Lowe and Dutchman Raymond van Barneveld have won the BDO title three times - with Bristow winning five in total - during the 34-year history of the tournament.

"The 116 went in sweet as a nut but that's my job, that's what I have to do," said Adams, who is making his 18th appearance at Frimley Green.

"I have come here to win the title this week. I want to do what Eric Bristow - my idol, who inspired me - did and repeat his three on a spin, which he achieved between 1984-86."

England's Trina Gulliver stretched her impressive record in the women's final for the 10th successive year after beating Russia's Irina Armstrong 2-0.

Gulliver will play Rhian Edwards, who beat second seed Deta Hedman 2-0.

"I was very happy with that game apart from my doubles," said the Welshwoman. "I was definitely more relaxed."
