West had three shots at double 20 to win the match but missed them all and Chisnall made him pay. "I had put my darts in my pocket because I expected him to hit that," Chisnall told BBC Sport. Second seed Stuart Kellett produced a stunning debut performance, losing only one leg in thrashing Darryl Fitton 3-0. He reeled off eight straight legs in a mesmerising display which featured three 180s and several ice cool finishes. "That certainly went to plan," said Kellett, the 2010 Scottish Open champion and World Masters runner-up. "It's scary but they just kept going in. I'm over the moon about. I tried to come out and enjoy it and I think it worked." Chisnall, who lost to Martin Adams in the 2010 final, made a scratchy start and had to come back from 2-1 behind to eventually topple West in the final set. "I've been playing OK but I need to be focused at all times," said Chisnall, who is not seeded because of the small number of events he competes in. "I feel sorry for Steve, he played well." Smith speechless after beating O'Shea West has now lost in the first round on all four of his appearances at Lakeside. Ross Smith, 21, pulled off a surprise 3-1 victory over eighth seed Tony O'Shea. The 2009 runner-up was well short of his best as he crashed out in 42 minutes. Dutchmen Joey ten Berge and Jan Dekker both eased into the second round with 3-0 victories over Englishmen Shaun Griffiths and Scott Mitchell respectively. And Yorkshire captain Garry Thompson beat 18-year-old German newcomer Arno Merk 3-1. In the first round of the women's championship Wales' Rhian Edwards knocked out fellow compatriot and third seed Julie Gore winning 2-1, while second seed Deta Hardman from England beat Belgium's Patricia de Peuter by the same score.
