Adams experienced no problems with Nixon this year

Second seed Gary Anderson crashed out of the BDO World Championship with a first-round defeat by 19-year-old Dutch qualifier Fabian Roosenbrand.

The Scot, who won the International Darts League and World Darts Trophy titles last year, was beaten 3-2.

Holder Martin Adams was in tears after starting his title defence with a 3-0 win over 2007 runner-up Phill Nixon.

"I am a bit emotional," said Adams. "Walking out on stage brought back all the emotions from last year's final."

Adams was cruising against Nixon 12 months ago before his opponent recovered from 6-0 down to 6-6 before losing 7-6.

"If I had played one of the other players, it would have been different," added Adams.

Anderson, who has lost four times in the first round in the last five years at the Lakeside, said: "The first round is just my voodoo in this tournament.

"I scored well but snatched my darts when throwing for doubles."

Roosenbrand next faces Australian Simon Whitlock, who beat 16th seed Edwin Max 3-0.

"I don't know much about Fabian but even the Dutch don't seem to know much about him - but hats off to the lad, he did well," added Anderson.

"I didn't practise for the tournament but then I never practise, I just turn up so perhaps I deserved to lose.

"I will not lose much sleep over the defeat, I'll just go on to the next tournament."

There were no upsets for third seed Scott Waites, who advanced into the next round with a 3-1 win over from Scotland's Mike Veitch.

Wales captain Martin Phillips also triumphed 3-1 over 13th seed Shaun Greatbatch, while 10th seed Martin Atkins lost 3-2 to Stoke qualifier Andy Boulton.
