Scotsman Robert Thornton produced some impressive darts to beat Darryl Fitton 7-5 in the Winmau World Masters final. The West Ayrshire veteran took the final three sets after a fluctuating encounter at Bridlington.
Fitton manufactured a marvellous 170 finish in the second leg of the fifth set and had edged 5-4 ahead before the Scot's determined recovery.
Thornton's victory also earns him a place in the BDO World Championships at Frimley Green starting in January.
Fitton, who had beaten Jon Walton earlier in the afternoon, fought back to level at 4-4 after Thorton had been 4-2 up after the interval.
He then edged ahead but Thornton produced a stunning 156 checkout to level at 5-5.
Having claimed the 11th set as well, Thornton won the first leg of the next against the darts.
A maximum left him with 81 for the title and he made no mistake with his second shot at double 18.
