England skipper Adams heads a strong field in Bridlington |
BDO world champion Martin Adams suffered a shock defeat to Scotland's Robert Thornton in the quarter-finals of the Winmau World Masters. Adams, the top seed, looked impressive in the previous round against Stuart Kellett in Bridlington.
But Thornton made a fast start and held his nerve to win 3-1 and set up a semi-final against Martin Atkins, who beat fans' favourite Ted Hankey 3-2.
"I'm a bit shell-shocked but I've been playing well all week," said Thornton.
John 'Boy' Walton produced a superb nine-dart finish in his last-16 clash with Martin Phillips, and the Yorkshireman impressed again when he came up against Tony O'Shea, winning 3-1.
Former world champion Walton will take on Darryl Fitton for a place in the final after the Stockport thrower overcame Australian Simon Whitlock 3-0.
Sunday will see the semi-finals and final, with coverage on BBC Two from 1330 to 1715 GMT, with the winner picking up 25,000.
The semi-finals are played over the best of 11 sets, with the final decided by a maximum of 13 sets.
