Taylor had to be in top form to withstand McGowan's challenge |
Phil Taylor put on a darts masterclass to beat in-form Irishman Mick McGowan 4-1 as the PDC World Championship resumed in Purfleet on Boxing Day. Both men averaged over 100, with Taylor averaging almost 110, as they thrilled the Circus Tavern with their darts.
McGowan struck first, wrapping up the first set in quick time.
But that served only to harden 13-time world champion Taylor, who showed respect for his opponent's outstanding effort after nailing his final double.
Earlier, Andy Hamilton edged out Mark Dudbridge 4-3 in another high-quality encounter.
The pair combined for an incredible 24 180s in the second-round match.
But Dudbridge missed far too many doubles, allowing "Hammer" Hamilton to earn his place in the last 16.
Alan Tabern won a sudden-death decider against Denis Ovens, who also missed double 12 for a nine-dart finish in the third set.
Dave Askew brought the day's action to a close with a 4-2 win over Alan Caves, who had surprisingly beaten Wayne Mardle in the first round.
