Walsh lost 3-0 to Dutch teenager Rico Vonck who hit checkouts of 110 and 140 in the first set, and a 138 to win the second set.

"I was really nervous in the first set," said Vonck after his competition debut, which was watched by his family in the audience.

"But when I went 2-0 up I was able to play my own game. My mother was really nervous too and she only slept for an hour or two last night, but it was beautiful."

The defeat of Bates, who lost 3-2 to Canada's Brian Cyr, was a surprise after he finished runner-up in the Budweiser UK Open.

Bates made a poor start to the match as his 50-year-old opponent raced into a 2-0 lead.

Although Bates forced a decider, Cyr regained his composure to finish off with a 116 checkout.

Warriner-Little was made to suffer by fellow Englishman Alan Tabern, who romped to a 3-0 win at the Circus Tavern.

Lloyd set up a second-round meeting with Raymond van Barneveld after both recorded 3-0 victories.

Lloyd defeated German Tomas Seyler while Barneveld, in his first match at the PDC World Championship after his switch from the BDO, got the better of Australian teenager Mitchell Clegg.
