Wiggins did not perform at his best at the Tour de France |
Team Sky's Bradley Wiggins made his return to competitive action in the Ouest France-Plouay race on Sunday. The 30-year-old finished in the third group to cross the line, one minute and 40 seconds behind winner Matthew Goss. Australian Goss defeated Tyler Farrar in a sprint finish, while Belgian Serge Pauwels was the highest placed Team Sky rider, finishing in 20th position. Meanwhile, Team Sky's Edvald Boasson Hagen remains in third place in the Eneco Tour after the fifth stage. Garmin-Transitions rider Jack Bobridge won Sunday's stage, four seconds ahead of Ruben Perez Moreno (Euskaltel-Euskadi) and Thomas De Gendt (Topsport Vlaanderen-Mercator). Boasson Hagen was 11 seconds behind Bobridge - and is one minute and 24 seconds behind leader Tony Martin with two stages left. Wiggins had a poor Tour de France, finishing 24th after starting the race with hopes of making the podium. The 30-year-old had initially been expected to ride in the Eneco Tour but withdrew because of a family bereavement. Stephen Cummings finished three places ahead of Wiggins in Brittany, while Russell Downing was 72nd. "Unfortunately Russell got stopped by a crash in front of him on that last lap which is a shame because he was feeling good and would have liked to contest the sprint, but that's bike racing," sports director Marcus Ljungvist told the Team Sky website. "Bradley and Steve were having their first race since the Tour so they were decent performances from them while Simon is getting better and better so hopefully for the Vuelta we'll see him right back to his best." The Eneco Tour continues on Monday with a 205.6km stage from Bilzen to Heers, and concludes on Tuesday with a 16.9km individual time trial in Genk.
