Belgian cyclist Frank Vandenbroucke has died at the age of 34, with reports suggesting that he may have suffered a pulmonary embolism. He was on holiday in Senegal when he was found dead in his room. Vandenbroucke recorded over 50 wins, including the Paris-Nice race in 1998 and the gruelling Liege-Bastogne-Liege classic the following year. He made his professional debut in 1994 but his career was marred when he was caught up in a doping scandal in 2002. | 606: YOUR TRIBUTES |
A pulmonary embolism is a blood clot that has entered the lungs. It was thought the Mouscron-born rider was keen to return to racing this year. Head of the Belgian cycling federation Laurent De Backer said: "An athlete with a brilliant but too short career has left us."
