| Vandenbroucke axed over drugs charges Belgian cyclist Frank Vandenbroucke has been sacked Belgian cyclist Frank Vandenbroucke has been sacked by his team Domo-Farm Frites after police found banned substances at his home. Police discovered endurance-enhancing EPO and muscle stimulant clembuterol in Vandenbroucke's home after detaining his medical adviser Bernard Sainz.
Sainz was stopped on the motorway for speeding and suspicious vials and syringes were found in the vehicle. Team officials immediately sacked the 27-year-old cyclist, and suggested that his cycling career is finished. "This is terrible. Not only for the image of Belgian cycling but for cycling in general," said Belgian federation president Laurent De Backer. Suspect temperament "Who is going to give him another chance? Nobody. "Vandenbroucke's career is over." This is not the first time that the Belgian has been at the centre of a doping controversy. He was leading the World Cup standings in 1999 before his team suspended him after he received banned substances from Sainz. Vandenbroucke's best season came in 1999 when he won eight races, including the World Cup classic Liege-Bastogne-Liege and two stages in the Spanish Vuelta. |
