Cavendish has become cycling's dominant sprinter this year |
Mark Cavendish sprinted to his second straight stage win on Tuesday to extend his lead in the Tour of Missouri. The Briton collected his 16th victory of the season by about a bike length in the 203.3km Clinton to Springfield leg. He clocked four hours, 53 minutes and 19 seconds, pipping German Eric Baumann, who lies joint third overall. Cavendish gained an additional 10 seconds of bonus time and now leads Italian Francesco Chicchi by 12 seconds with five stages remaining. Chicchi repeated his third-place finish in Monday's opening stage, while American defending champion George Hincapie came home in 27th. Isle of Man sprint specialist Cavendish, who won four stages of this year's Tour de France, began the day with a four-second lead. | 606: DEBATE |
His fellow Team Colombia riders controlled the stage at the front of the field, just as they did on Monday. Wednesday's third stage sees the field of 114 tackle a 28.6-km individual time-trial in Branson.
