Briton Bradley Wiggins retained the overall lead in the Dauphine Libere race on Monday after the first stage. Wiggins, who won the prologue on Sunday, finishing 22nd on the 219km stage from Grenoble to Roanne to retain a one-second lead over Levi Leipheimer.
"Hopefully now I'll keep the jersey at least until Wednesday's time-trial," said the Olympic gold medalist.
German Heinrich Haussler won the stage, the Gerolsteiner rider pipping favourite Tom Boonen in the sprint.
The eight-day Dauphine Libere finishes next Sunday, 17 June, in Annecy.
