NI rider David McCann finished in 12th place in road race |
Northern Ireland cyclists may have been out of the medals in the men's road race around Melbourne on Sunday but they had three finishers in the top 15. Roger Aiken stormed home in eighth place in a group of 10 which also included fellow countrymen David McCann (12th) and Stephen Gallagher (13th).
The trio were credited with a time of 4:05.47 which was only 38 seconds behind Aussie winner Matthew Hayman.
Ryan Connor (28th) and Tommy Evans (31st) were the other NI finishers.
Lewis Ferguson pulled out after completing nine of the 15 laps of the 166km course.
The NI trio at the head of the race were in the main breakaway group in the early stages, but could not sustain the pace when the powerful Australian squad put on the pressure at the end.
