Danish rider Mickael Rasmussen puts in a strong display, winning all of the day's climbs and claiming victory in Sunday's stage to Mulhouse.
The Rabobank rider dominated the day's two big climbs - the Grand Ballon and Le Ballon d'Alsace - to extend his lead in the polka dot jersey standings.
He easily held off the challenge of Christophe Moreau and Jens Voigt, who was second in the overall standings.
Voigt's display sees him take over the yellow jersey from Lance Armstrong.
1519: Rasmussen pushes all the way to the finish and, cheered on by a big crowd in Mulhouse crosses the line arms aloft for a great solo victory.
1510: Rasmussen edges closer to stage victory with 5.6km to go while Voigt and Moreau chasing him seem set to take the top two places in the overall standings although the peloton are closing the gap.
1500: With 14km to go, Rasmussen holds a lead of over four minutes and looks almost a certainty for the stage victory as he continues to pile on the pressure.
1453: Disaster strikes as Voigt suffers a puncture and loses a bit of time but he quickly recovers and rejoins Moreau with 22km to go.
1452: Moreau and Voigt look like they will not be able to chase down Rasmussen but they will certainly make a big impact on the overall classification.
1445: The peloton are still just under nine minutes behind Rasmussen and the Dane holds a lead of around four minutes over Moreau and Voigt, who looks increasingly likely to take the yellow jersey with around 25km to go.
1435:With 40km to go, Rasmussen leads by four minutes and triumphs in the second intermediate sprint but Voigt and Moreau are eating slowly into the lead. The peloton are still around nine minutes back.
1425: Rasmussen has around 50km to go and he is about nine minutes clear of the peloton and he is being chased by Voigt and Moreau. Voigt is looking good to take over the yellow jersey from Lance Armstrong if this pace continues.
1415: Cioni's challenge has faded and Moreau and Voigt cross the line around 4.20 behind Rasmussen as they chase the Dane with around 55km to go but the rest of the course is relatively flat.
1410: Rasmussen gets up Le Ballon d'Alsace, the day's category one climb amid massive support from the crowd. He makes it a clean sweep of the day's climbs to hold a commanding lead in the polka dot jersey standings.
1344: Rasmussen wins the latest climb, the Col de Bussang, with around 70km to go. Cioni is second, although he is now a minute behind the Dane. Christophe Moreau is third with Alexandre Moos fourth but they are three minutes behind Rasmussen. Rasmussen is the favourite to make a clean sweep of the climbs with the Category One Le Ballon d'Alsace.
1325:Salvatore Commesso of the Lamore-Caffita team and Saulnier Duval - Prodir rider Jose Angel Gomez are involved in a crash in the feed zone. Commesso gets back on the bike but Gomez's Tour looks like it is over. At the head of the field, Mickael Rasmussen and Dario Cioni are 78.5km from the finish line and are 2.20 ahead of the group of six riders.
1257: Another climb success for Mickael Rasmussen who proves strongest on the Grand Ballon with Dario Cioni just behind. The pair are around 2.30 clear of a group of six riders with the peloton about eight minutes back. The riders have around 100km to go.
1248: Six riders - Christophe Moreau, Xabier Zandio, Alexandre Moos, Inigo Landaluze, Angel Vicioso and Jens Voigt are now three minutes behind the leading two as they continue their climb up the Grand Ballon.
1225: Mickael Rasmussen and Dario Cioni now lead the peloton by six minutes and 40 seconds with 120km to go. Jens Voigt, who was second overall coming into Sunday's stage, is 3.50 ahead of leader Lance Armstrong.
1205: The day's third climb, the Col de Bramont is also won by Mickael Rasmussen to make it three wins out of three so far today. Dario Cioni is second once again for some useful points. The pair are 2.20 ahead of their nearest challengers as they make their way towards the first category two climb, the Grand Ballon.
1155: Mickael Rasmussen wins the four points for the day's second climb at Col des Feignes. Dario Cioni, who is keeping him company at the head of the field, takes three points. Christophe Moreau and Xabier Zandio claim the other points but they are over two minutes back in the chasing group.
1135: Rasmussen is joined by Liquigas-Bianchi rider Dario Cioni at the head of the field and they are gradually building up a lead of over one minute. Already there has been drama on the course with American David Zabriskie pulling out while Jan Ullrich suffers a fall but he is quickly back on his back.
1125: Mickael Rasmussen takes the day's first climb on the Col de Grosse Pierre, ahead of Santiago Botero and Michael Boogerd and he has got a lead of around 20 seconds over the peloton.
1120: An early crash in the middle of the peloton causes Liberty Seguros-Worth rider Alberto Contador to finish injured on the ground as Mickael Rasmussen leads on the day's first climb of the day.
1108: The riders head from Gerardmer in preparation for the start of the day's stage.
1045: The riders are ready to get under way from Saturday's finishing point - the town of Gerardmer. Thundery showers are forecast for later in the day.
