Chris Hoy's father is urging Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell to step into the row that looks like preventing his son from defending his Olympic title. The International Olympic Committee has removed the men's and women's cycling time-trials to make way for BMX racing.
And David Hoy, who is a director of Scottish Cycling, told BBC Sport: "This is an absolute outrage.
"It is the cycling equivalent of Liverpool not being allowed to defend the Champions League trophy."
Hoy is sending letters to Jowell, the Scottish Executive, the British Olympic Association and the Commonwealth Games Committee urging them to put pressure on the IOC to change their decision before the Beijing Games.
"This is not just a personal tirade from a grumpy dad," said Hoy.
"There is general disbelief in the cycling world at this decision and more than 1,000 people have already signed an online petition since it started on Saturday.
"We are already one year into an Olympic cycle and these guys have already made arrangements to prepare for the event.
"They have now lost one year of their preparations."
Hoy claimed gold in Athens, setting a new Olympic record of one minute 0.711 seconds in the process.
