The BBC at the Boat Race
Grandstand's Steve Rider
Steve Rider will co-ordinate Grandstand's coverage
Follow the 149th University Boat Race every step of the way on television, on radio and online.

The big event on the River Thames takes place on Sunday 6 April at 1630 BST.

And the BBC will be there at the helm for everything from the teams' last minute preparations to live coverage and expert analysis.

TELEVISION

Steve Rider presents all the action as Grandstand incorporates yet more ground-breaking technology in its coverage on BBC1 from 1530-1705 BST.

LIVE BBC COVERAGE
Date: Sunday 6 April
Start time: 1630 BST
Location: River Thames
Steve will be joined on the riverside by Sydney 2000 Olympic Gold medallist and 1997 Oxford Blue Tim Foster.

Barry Davies, Chris Bailieu and Dan Topolski are the commentators, while Hazel Irvine will be Thames-side capturing the colour and atmosphere of the day.

This year over 25 cameras line the river and for the first time a Global Positioning System (GPS) will be used to chart the exact position of the boats in relation to each other and the course.

The on-board system will also transmit the comparative stroke rate and speed of both crews and heart rate monitors will feed back the individual efforts of the crew.

Also new for 2003 is coxcam - showing the coxes in action - and cameras in the boathouses, capturing the final preparations of both crew before they take to the water.

Plus:

  • Willie Carson will be put through his paces by James Cracknell when the lightweight ex-jockey learns how to be a cox.

  • Matt Pinsent will be explaining the tactics and the tricks of how to win the Boat Race.

  • There's an alternative guide to the course taking viewers on a riverside journey to the best pubs, notable landmarks and places of interest from Putney to Mortlake.

  • Father and son duo Peter and Dan Snow team up to travel down river charting the highs and lows, the sinkings and the clashes of 148 years of Boat Race history.

ONLINE

The University Boat Race will be shown live on the BBC Sport website, with in-depth coverage found at

There are interviews with team presidents Matt Smith and Tim Wooge, plus an exclusive chat with James and David Livingston, the first brothers to race on opposing teams for 103 years.

There are also profiles of both the Dark and Light Blue crews, video and photos from the archives and a clickable guide outlining the four-and-a-quarter mile course.

And as the crews cross the finishing line there will be up-to-date reports and reaction.
