Captain Greg Streete led the way with 21 points against Coventry |
Bristol Academy Flyers kicked off the 2009/10 basketball season with 69-56 away win at Coventry Crusaders in the National Trophy. The first quarter was tight with both sides on 10 points but Bristol extended their lead to 36-22 at half-time. The Crusaders hit back to level the scores at 51 in the third quarter before the Flyers dominated the last quarter to win by 13 points. Bristol's top scorer was captain Greg Streete who finished with 21 points. "This was a good display in our first regular season game, Coventry fought hard but I think we were just too strong for the Crusaders, said Flyers coach Andreas Kapoulas. "We have a big team this year and they have great potential. The dynamics of the team were fantastic today and with a few more games under our belts we could see the makings of a fantastic team. "Greg Streete was outstanding today and has taken his role of team captain very well. He led the team and was inspirational." Bristol's next match is away to local rivals Taunton Tigers on Sunday 4 October in the National Trophy. Their first home league encounter sees the Flyers take on last season's National One league champions, Reading Rockets, on 7 November.
