Paternostro paid tribute to his new point guard Tack Minor.
The Leicester began the new BBL season with a 113-93 home win over the Sheffield Sharks.
It was a difficult game for the Riders new point guard Tack Minor who learnt of the death of his best friend hours before tip off.
"I know this game meant a lot to him, and he was a true professional," Leicester coach Rob Paternostro told BBC Radio Leicester.
Minor recorded a triple double with 19 points, 10 rebounds and 11 assists.
The American was in tears after the game but later spoke to BBC Radio Leicester: "I just dedicate this to him. I just put it all behind me and played my best, but he'll always have a place in my heart."
On the win over Sheffield, the Leicester head coach Rob Paternostro saw his side out rebound the opposition 53-28, and another of his new signings Jason Johnson had 22 points and 13 rebounds.
"I thought we were solid throughout, and although I didn't know what to expect with all our new signings they really stepped up," Paternostro said.
The Riders now face a double header, travelling to champions Newcastle on 2nd October followed by a home game against the Everton Tigers on the 3rd October.
