PRO40 DIVISION TWO, Grace Road:
Surrey 228-6 beat Leicestershire 225-4 by four wickets

A sixth-wicket stand of 123 between Matthew Spriegel and Tom Smith took Surrey to a four-wicket Pro40 victory over Leicestershire at Grace Road.

Spriegel (81no) and Smith (65) came together with Surrey on 94-5 in pursuit of 226, but helped get them home with five balls to spare.

Earlier, James Taylor's unbeaten 83 was the mainstay of the home side's 225-4.

Despite the win, Surrey end the last-ever Pro40 season with the wooden spoon, Leicestershire finishing eighth.

The 20-over stand between Spriegel and Smith was ended in the penultimate over when Smith was bowled by James Benning.

But, enough had already been done to ensure a victory which looked unlikely when Chris Schofield was run out in the 19th over to become the fifth wicket to fall.

Spriegel made his 81 off 91 balls with just five boundaries while Smith took 61 balls for his 65 and also struck five fours.

On a day dominated by youngsters, Taylor, the Cricket Writers' Club young player of the year, dominated the Leicestershire innings with his 63-ball effort.

The 19-year-old, supported by Benning (47) and Paul Nixon (44), looked to have done enough to secure victory for the home side until Spriegel and Smith intervened.
