Donovan is now head of a University of Worcester department
Worcester Wolves are aiming to end next season in the top six of the BBL after finishing 10th this year.
"That's where we should have been this year really," former director of basketball Mick Donovan told BBC Hereford & Worcester.
"Top four would be even better but certainly we're looking for top six."
Former Wolves player Chuck Evans has left play-off finalists Everton to replace Skouson Harker as head coach, but the Canadian will stay as a player.
"Last year we felt we underachieved and I'd say in some of the games, had the coach not been so involved as a player himself, then there would have been different results," Donovan continued.
He speaks highly of the new American coach who played for the Wolves in 2007/08 and studied for a Masters at the University of Worcester.
We haven't made any decision in terms of Anthony Paez or Justin Brown but Vidmantis Uzkuraitis is definitely coming back

"He's coached a range of junior levels and has his European coaching award which is really well recognised and respected, so we think he's the right man for it," he said.
Donovan admits Evans is likely to want to make his own mark on the team.
"There'll be players he wants to bring in and we don't want to pick the team for him either," he said.
However he admitted that the Worcester Wolves are talking with a number of other players about their futures.
"The club has made some of the players offers and others want too much, so may not be coming back in the current climate," Donovan said.
"We haven't made any decision in terms of Anthony Paez or Justin Brown but Vidmantis Uzkuraitis is definitely coming back."
