British forward Pops Mensah-Bonsu has signed with Italian club Benetton Treviso just three days after being released by NBA club Dallas Mavericks. The 6ft 9in Londoner is expected to be formally unveiled on Wednesday after agreeing a contract over the weekend.
Mensah-Bonsu, who turns 24 on Thursday, played only 12 times for Dallas last season, averaging 2.4 points per game.
Mensah-Bonsu's one-year deal means he could play for Great Britain as soon as next week if picked.
On Wednesday night, GB face Belarus in Minsk knowing that a win would qualify them for a two-leg play-off tie on 11 and 15 September.
That would give GB coach Chris Finch just five days to thread Mensah-Bonsu into his rotation for the two ties.
"It depends if he wants to join up or if his team will let him," Finch told BBC Sport. "I'm not 100% certain we'd take him but we'd certainly think about it.
"That not a comment on him as a player - at this stage it's more about protecting what we have here."
An explosively athletic player, Mensah-Bonsu was named most valuable player in last season's All-Star Game of the NBDL, the development league of the NBA.
The fact that he has signed in Europe means his insurance would be covered by the world governing body Fiba if he chooses to play for Great Britain.
This was not the case while he was awaiting Dallas' decision on whether to extend his contract.
