Luol Deng pulled the strings for Great Britain once again |
Great Britain, fuelled by 27 points from Luol Deng, easily beat Netherlands 83-64 in the second of their Eurobasket qualifiers in Almere, near Amsterdam. Deng had 18 points as GB built a 43-30 half-time lead and added nine more in a 27-15 third quarter for Britain.
Andrew Betts added 13 points for GB and Mike Lenzly added 12 as Chris Finch's team went top of qualifying Group B.
The team's next game comes on Saturday in Edinburgh, when they host Albania in their penultimate pool game.
The only disappointment of the evening was more injury worries for Robert Archibald.
Having been troubled with ankle problems this summer, he was substituted in the second quarter and was not even on the bench in the third, after suffering back spasms.
The British team began steadily, always in the lead and moving 20 points clear in the second quarter, before being pegged back to a 13-point advantage at the break.
A run of 13 unanswered points either side of the third quarter break stretched the advantage to 30 points, at 76-45.
Kees Akerboom did his best to keep the home side in the game with 20 points but there was never any danger of the Dutch closing the gap.
Afterwards, Finch praised individual players but said overall there was room for improvement.
"Mike Lenzly was good and Chris Haslam played well too," he said.
"Luol did really well. I didn't like the fact that we looked for him too much at times early on. We didn't have a lot of good ball movement in the first half.
"So far we have been able to throw any line-up on and overpower the opposition.
"Someone in this group is going to lose to Albania at some point and we must make sure it won't be us."
