The Eagles have enjoyed a highly successful campaign

The Newcastle Eagles, led by 27 points from English guard Andrew Sullivan, won the BBL play-offs title when they beat Chester 78-75 in the final.

Sullivan hit four three-pointers in his haul and became the first English winner of the MVP award in 11 years.

The Jets held a narrow lead for the first three quarters, but the Eagles were always in touch.

Sullivan sparked their winning run, scoring seven of their last 12 points in a dramatic last five minutes.

Newcastle player-coach Fab Flournoy praised his match-winning star as the Eagles celebrated victory at Birmingham's National Indoor Arena.

"Andrew's a phenomenal basketball player," said Flournoy. "He's really quick and athletic and he knows the game of basketball.

"It's hard to believe he's not American with the way he plays the game."

Flournoy, now naturalised as British, will now play in England's international programme this summer.

Beaten Chester coach Paul Smith expressed pride in his players despite their defeat.

"We're very proud of what we've achieved this season," he said. "We were only two baskets away from winning the double.

"Maybe the foul trouble we had was a factor, but we also lost the rebounds 41 to 30 against a team that's smaller than us."

"Overall it was a great game between two well-matched teams going at it."
