England's Nathan Robertson and Jenny Wallwork eased into the mixed doubles second round at the 100th All England Open Championships on Wednesday.

The pair beat Ukrainians Elena Prus and Valeriy Atrashchenkov 21-14 21-12, and now face Danish seventh seeds Thomas Laybourn and Kamilla Rytter Juhl.

In the men's singles, Rajiv Ouseph beat Matthieu Lo Ying Ping 21-17 21-19, while Andrew Smith beat Eric Pang.

Smith faces ex-Olympic champion Taufik Hidayat after his 21-10 21-11 win.

Scotland's Susan Egelstaff, Britain's only player in the main women's draw, beat Sayaka Sato of Japan 21-9 21-19.

That impressive victory set up a second-round encounter with sixth seed Lu Lan of China for 27-year-old Egelstaff.

Elsewhere in the mixed doubles, there was defeat for former world junior silver medallists Chris Adcock and Gabby White, who went out to Anglo-Scottish pair Robert Blair and Imogen Bankier 21-19 17-21 21-17.

Blair defied the back strain that forced him out of last week's German Open but, later in the evening, was forced to retire from his doubles match with Adcock against Fang Chieh Min and Lee Sheng Mu of Taipei when trailing 20-14.

Anthony Clark and Heather Olver cruised past Indonesian pair Fran Kurniawan Teng and Pia Zebadiah Bernadet, taking 23 minutes to complete a 21-7 21-13 victory.

Singapore Open winners Clark and Robertson began their men's doubles campaign by beating the 2005 world champions Howard Bach and Tony Gunawan of the United States, 21-16 21-15.

606: DEBATE

But there was no such success for Andrew Ellis and Dean George, who came through Tuesday's qualifying, as they suffered a 21-19 21-14 first-round exit to Hiroyuki Endo and Yoshiteru Hirobe of Japan.

In the women's doubles, White and Wallwork battled past Jang Ye Na and Hyun Young Yoo of Korea 16-21 21-17 21-18, but Mariana Agathangelou and Olver tumbled out against Dutch stars Judith Meulendijks and Yao Jie 21-18 21-9.

The biggest shock of the day was the defeat of 2007 champions and top seeds Koo Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong of Malaysia.

They had won the previous Super Series event, the Malaysian Open, but fell to 2003 world champions Lars Paaske and Jonas Rasmussen of Denmark 21-13 21-11.
