Newquay's Russel Winter made the most of choppy conditions to take the top prize at the North East Surf Open at Longsands Beach, Tynemouth.

The win was Winter's second in a row on the 2010 UK Pro Surf Tour, and helps maintain his Tour lead.

Winter said: "It has been a fantastic event, I have enjoyed coming to Tyenouth and competing in good waves."

Second place went to Bude's Joss Ash, while French surfer Gordon Fontaine finished in third.

A Newquay surfer also emerged victorious in the Pro Junior Division, Lewis Clinton taking the honours from Croyde's Lyndon Wake after a tight final.
