Jersey is hosting the 9th Commonwealth Veterans Fencing Championships |
More than 100 fencers will compete in the ninth Commonwealth Veterans Fencing Championships in Jersey this weekend. Competitors from across the globe have turned up for the bi-annual event from a dozen Commonwealth nations. Event organiser Martha Bernstein is pleased with the turnout for the competition. "It's amazing to have all these people come in from all over the world as far away as Australia, New Zealand and Singapore as well." | This is the biggest fencing competition that is likely to be in the Channel Islands for the foreseeable future |
One hundred and five competitors have entered, making the Jersey event the largest veterans tournament. Competitors range from 40 to 81-years-old, with action in all three fencing disciplines: foil, sabre and epee. Bernstein is calling on the Jersey public to support the event. "This is the biggest fencing competition that is likely to be in the Channel Islands for the foreseeable future and everyone should come up and watch," she added. Bernstein also thinks the competition will help with the development of the sport locally. She continued: "The veterans being parents and grandparents are very good teachers, they want to share, they want to help, so our younger fencers are going to learn a lot."
