Gallienne defends his world title

Gallienne is only the third person to retain the world bar billiards title

Guernsey's Trevor Gallienne has become only the third person in history to successfully defend their world bar billiards title.

The bookmaker beat England number one Kevin Tunstall by 16,090 points to 3,990 in the final on Sunday.

"It was a good final and it all worked out well," Gallienne told BBC Guernsey.

Five of the last eight players in the tournament were English, with Jersey supplying the other two in Harry Barbet and Alan Phillips.

The only other players to successfully defend their titles are Tunstall, who had back-to-back wins in 1993 and 1994, and Jersey's Steve Ahier, who won successive titles in 1990 and 1991.

And Gallienne admitted it was a hard task to retain his title.

"I was drawn in a pretty horrendous group with quality players all the way through," he said.

"Then from the quarter-finals downwards it got even tougher because I played against guys who'd won it two or three times each."
